Is the gateway PCI DSS compliant?

Yes. PAYSTRAX’s payment gateway is PCI DSS compliant, meaning it meets the payment card industry’s security standards for handling, processing, and storing cardholder data.

What’s the difference between a payment gateway and a direct acquirer?

A payment gateway is just the technology that captures and encrypts payment data at checkout and passes it along for approval – it still relies on a separate acquiring bank to actually process the transaction. A direct acquirer, like PAYSTRAX, holds that acquiring relationship itself, so there’s no third party in between — which means faster approvals, quicker settlement, and one point of contact.

Where does PAYSTRAX operate?

PAYSTRAX serves merchants across the UK and the European Economic Area (EEA). PAYSTRAX is a Payment Institution authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) in the UK, and a Payment Institution supervised by the Bank of Lithuania. This dual licensing, combined with our own Visa and Mastercard Principal Membership, allows us to support both online and in-store payment processing for merchants throughout the UK and EU.

What does it mean that PAYSTRAX is a Principal Member of Visa and Mastercard?

Being a Principal Member means PAYSTRAX is licensed directly by Visa and Mastercard to acquire card transactions, rather than operating under another bank’s licence. For merchants, that translates into tangible benefits: faster onboarding since approvals don’t have to pass through a sponsor bank, more transparent and predictable pricing with no reseller markup added on top, and direct control over risk and underwriting decisions – meaning fewer delays and more flexibility when your business needs are reviewed.

What is a direct payment acquirer?

A direct payment acquirer is a financial institution that holds its own Visa and Mastercard principal membership, letting it process card payments directly rather than through a third-party sponsor bank. This means it handles authorisation, clearing, and settlement itself – resulting in faster onboarding, more control over risk decisions, and no reseller markup.

How do I apply for a merchant account?

To apply for a merchant account, you need to fill out the form on our website. The form can be found here.

What types of cards can be accepted?

With PAYSTRAX you can accept all Visa and Mastercard cards. Additionally, you can accept alternative payment methods such as Google Pay and Apple Pay, as well as any of the 300 alternative payment methods upon demand.

When will I receive my settlement funds?

Settlement funds payouts are agreed with each merchant individually. They can be paid out daily or weekly.

Can I use more than one card acquirer?

Yes, it’s possible for merchants to use more than one card acquirer simultaneously. This set-up, known as a multi-acquirer strategy, can offer benefits such as increased redundancy, improved transaction success rates and access to different payment methods.

In what countries do PAYSTRAX services work?

We hold PI licence issued by the Bank of Lithuania and FCA Payment Institution licence that allows us to service merchants in all EU and EEA countries including UK.
